  • The Third Man Records iPhone Case

Posted by Third Man on 30 November 2011

2011 has been a year of unique collaborations for Third Man Records; Stephen Colbert and garage rock goth girl group The Black Belles, Insane Clown Posse and Mozart, and now our newest mash up, vinyl and the iPhone. Nothing goes together better than vinyl records and technology. With that in mind TMR teamed up with Griffin Technology to create a unique product for a unique generation of music lovers who own one of the most popular smart phones on the market. The Third Man 45 iPhone Case. The Third Man 45 iPhone Case comes in a variety of options and features components made from 7” vinyl records from Third Man’s extensive catalog, all pressed at United Record Pressing in Nashville.

Along with the folks at Third Man, the team at Griffin shares a love of all things vinyl - the immediate and tangible aspect of a record and the experience each listener shares with the music that lies within the grooves of the record. Griffin also calls Nashville home, which made this collaboration all the more accessible and natural. The Griffin team has worked tirelessly with Third Man to bend and mold each piece of this custom project and facilitated the creation of the most accurate reflection of what Third Man represents in a very new and exciting form.

To create The Third Man 45 iPhone Case for use with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, we incorporated a genuine 7” vinyl record, pressed by United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN. The records were then die-cut to create the backs of each case. A molded bumper frame snaps around your iPhone, holding the interchangeable record insert in place and protecting the controls, edges and screen of your precious iPhone.

The Third Man 45 iPhone Case is available in three different variations. You can purchase your Third Man case with a yellow, black, or white frame and each version of the frame comes with 1 black vinyl record back featuring our classic Third Man printed label.

But that’s not all. We went a step further and created three additional record backs featuring some of our prominent Third Man artists. The Interchangeable iPhone Record Inserts come packaged as a set and are for use with your Third Man 45 iPhone Case. This add-on accessory set for your Third Man iPhone 45 Case includes:
    • 1 white vinyl record back cut from The White Stripes “Candy Cane Children” single
    • 1 black vinyl record back cut from The Raconteurs “Steady, As She Goes” single from their first album Broken Boy Soldiers. These Raconteurs inserts represent the first pressing of this single soon to be available as a reissue from Third Man.
    • 1 yellow vinyl record back cut from The Dead Weather single “Treat Me Like Your Mother” from their first album Horehound

The Third Man 45 iPhone Case and Interchangeable iPhone Record Inserts will be available for pre-order from www.thirdmanrecords.com starting tomorrow, December 1st. Both components will begin shipping the 9th of December and will be available for purchase in person at the Third Man Records Nashville store beginning December 10th.

  • GIVE THANKS FOR THIRD MAN RECORDS' WINTER BOUNTY

Posted by Third Man on 18 November 2011

Third Man Records celebrates the end of the year with a slew of new reasons to be thankful.

First up is a cornucopia of new vinyl 45 goodness beginning with Edgar Oliver's "In The Park" b/w "Hunger and Light" (TMR121). The latest in TMR's Green Series of spoken word/instructional records comes from critically-acclaimed, syrup-voiced actor, playwright and noir poet Edgar Oliver. On his Third Man single he delivers the chilling poem “In the Park” with palpable suspense. The B-side "Hunger and Light" is recorded in Triple Reverse Cryptophonica ™ and will (hopefully) have you spending hours trying to figure out exactly what he’s saying. Edgar Oliver's "In The Park" b/w "Hunger and Light" will be released on vinyl and iTunes on November 22nd. Edgar Oliver is also a Science Channel "Oddities" regular.

As for the ongoing Blue Series, a man who needs no introduction -- but who we'll introduce as John C. Reilly will release not one but TWO Third Man singles in November, both featuring The Black Belles' Olivia Jean, Fats Kaplin and Jack White on drums. John & Tom: "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar" b/w "Lonesome Yodel Blues #2" (TMR112) finds John's duet with Tom Brosseau sung in close harmony as they perform two songs originally by The Delmore Brothers.

Becky & John's "I'll Be There If You Ever Want" b/w "I'm Making Plans" (TMR113) sees John paired with Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) and swerves more in the classic country vein taking in tunes originally performed by Ray Price and Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner. Both are released on November 29th on vinyl and iTunes.

But wait, there's more TMR end of year celebration afoot, namely four offerings from The White Stripes: "The Big Three Killed My Baby" b/w "Red Bowling Ball Ruth" (TMR117) is a reissue of the decade-plus out of print only single off the White Stripes self-titled debut album. The A-side is Jack White's tempered screed against the monopoly of American auto companies against the accented thud of Meg’s pounding drums. The B-side "Red Bowling Ball Ruth" is exclusive to this single and overflows with AC/DC-inspired rock riffs. Re-mastered direct from the original analog masters! "Lord, Send Me an Angel" b/w "You’re Pretty Good Looking (Trendy American Remix)" (TMR118) was originally released as part of the White Stripes Japan-Australia-New Zealand "Three Island Tour" in October 2000, and now these songs are back in print for the first time in over a decade. The A-side is a cover of Blind Willie McTell’s "Lord, Send Me an Angel" with parts of his classic "Ticket Agent" thrown into the mix for good measure. Pay attention to Jack White’s update of the lyrics to reflect his own geographical location. The flipside is an Auto-Tuned (before they called it that) remix of "You’re Pretty Good Looking" that’s a peculiar novelty to say the least. Both tracks are re-mastered directly from the original master tape.

The last two reissues from the White Stripes catalog to finish out the year are "Candy Cane Children" b/w "Reading of the Story of the Magi", "Silent Night" (TMR071) and "Hello Operator" b/w "Jolene" (TMR067), releasing December 6th. Merry Christmas from The White Stripes is available again! 333 copies were printed on red vinyl and included as part of the White Stripes 2010 Holiday Merchandise package, but in print forever copies are now to be had on black vinyl. The A-side was originally recorded in 1998 and its' title has been appropriated by Stripes fans as a term to describe themselves as a group. The B-side features Meg singing an a cappella version of "Silent Night" coupled with Jack reading the Story of the Magi from the Bible. The whole thing is a warming, heartfelt pile of Christmas goodness...dig in! While a picture disc version of "Hello Operator" b/w "Jolene" was available in 2010 from Third Man's subscription-only series the Vault, the black vinyl, picture sleeve version is now available for all to buy and will be kept in print eternally. The sole single off of the Stripes sophomore "De Stijl" album, "Hello Operator" was the first song legendary UK DJ John Peel ever played by the band. If that wasn’t enough, the B-side showcases the band’s cover of Dolly Parton’s "Jolene" a long-time fan favorite the studio version only ever available on this single.

Additionally, Third Man Records is excited to announce five exciting new gems just in time for this 2012 holiday season.
